Allelopathic effects of Lantana Camara Extract on weeds and cultivated crops: A systematic review
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aim of this review is to investigate the potential of Lantana camara extracts for the use of a natural and compatible method as an effective alternative for synthetic herbicides to control weeds and also establish the effects of allelochemicals in the extract on the germination and growth of cultivated crops. The researchers accessed abstracts and articles published from 2011 to 2022.The review has established that although Lanatana camara extract has significant allelopathic property to suppress the germination and growth of weeds in the fields, it also affect the cultivated crops. This is due to the fact that allelochemicals are not entirely selective on the plants they inhibit. Therefore, it should only be used judiciously on crops whose germination and growth cannot be suppressed. The review recommends that more research should be conducted to evaluate allelopathic potential of stem and roots extracts of Lanatana camara. There is need to establish proper timing of application of the extract to avoid the suppression of germination and early seedling growth of cultivated crops. More research has to been done to evaluate the allopathic effects. There is limited information on the effects of the L.camara extrac on the yields of the crops as such this review recommends that reaesrch b conducted to evaluate the effects of alleochemicals of Lanatana camara on the yields of the cultivated crops in the fields where the extracts have been applied.
